1–20First Night

Things players overhear right away. Weird, but deniable.

Reality is clearly breaking. Investigation becomes urgent.

81–100The Veil Is Thin

The curse is nearly overwhelming. Act now or lose the village.

Mix true rumors with false ones. The best cursed villages are the ones where the paranoia is justified and excessive at the same time.

1–20First Night
1.

The blacksmith hasn't slept in three months. You can hear his hammer at 3 AM — every single night.

2.

Old Mag says the well water tastes like copper now. Nobody else admits it, but nobody drinks from it either.

3.

The priest's sermons have gotten really good lately. Like, suspiciously good. Like he's channeling something.

4.

There's a woman who walks the cemetery at midnight. Some say she's a ghost. Others say she's too angry to be dead.

5.

The innkeeper knew my name before I told her. She knew my wife's name too.

6.

Three families have "moved away" this season. Nobody remembers seeing them pack.

7.

The children won't play near the chapel anymore. They say the shadows move wrong there.

8.

A farmer found his entire flock of sheep standing in a perfect circle at dawn. None of them would move.

9.

Every seventh night, the dogs howl in unison at exactly midnight. Then they go silent for exactly one hour.

10.

The baker's son drew a picture of "the man under the floor." They don't have a cellar.

11.

If you listen carefully at the old well, you can hear someone counting backwards from a very large number.

12.

The herbalist's cottage has been abandoned for years, but smoke comes from the chimney on cold nights.

13.

Two villagers swear they saw the miller's dead wife walking home from the market. She was carrying bread.

14.

The village elder hasn't aged in fifteen years. Everyone's noticed. Nobody mentions it.

15.

Crows refuse to fly over the village. They circle the perimeter and land in the fields outside.

16.

A traveling merchant left in the middle of the night without selling anything. Left his entire cart behind.

17.

The forge fire turned blue one night and won't go back. The blacksmith says it's fine. It is not fine.

18.

Someone carved protective runes into every door frame on the north side of the village. Nobody knows who.

19.

The graveyard has more headstones than the village has had deaths. The extra ones have tomorrow's date.

20.

A child told the constable, very calmly, exactly how and when he would die. She was right about the baker.

21–50Something Is Wrong
21.

There's a cat that sits on the chapel roof every night. The priest throws stones at it. It always comes back.

22.

The river reversed flow for half an hour last Tuesday. The fish were swimming backwards.

23.

Three people have independently reported seeing their own reflection blink when they didn't.

24.

The midwife delivered a baby last month that laughed instead of cried. It hasn't stopped laughing since.

25.

Every door in the tavern slams shut at exactly sundown. The innkeeper just sighs and reopens them.

26.

Someone's been leaving fresh flowers on graves of people who aren't dead yet.

27.

The village teacher quit after a student answered a question she hadn't asked yet.

28.

You can hear singing from the old mine. Beautiful singing. Nobody will investigate.

29.

A woodcutter's axe got stuck in a tree and wouldn't come out. Then the tree started bleeding.

30.

The sundial in the town square runs two hours fast — but only after dark.

31.

All the mirrors in the inn have been covered with cloth. The innkeeper says they "show too much."

32.

The blacksmith's new swords whisper. Most people pretend they don't hear it.

33.

A stranger arrived last week asking very specific questions. By morning, he'd forgotten his own name.

34.

The church bells ring by themselves at 3 AM. The rope isn't moving when they do.

35.

Identical twin sisters live on opposite ends of the village. Nobody remembers them moving there. Nobody remembers them being born.

36.

The village drunk insists he died last winter and nobody noticed. He seems surprisingly sober about it.

37.

Mushrooms grew in a perfect spiral around the well overnight. They spell something in a language nobody reads.

38.

The constable patrols with his eyes closed after midnight. He says he can see better that way now.

39.

A pig escaped its pen and walked into the forest on its hind legs. The farmer doesn't want it back.

40.

The stars above the village don't match the stars above the surrounding fields. Local astronomers have confirmed this.

41.

Someone left a journal in the tavern. It contains a detailed account of the next three days. So far, it's been accurate.

42.

The potter made a vase that moans softly when it's empty. He's made fourteen more since. They won't stop.

43.

An old woman claims her shadow has been missing for a week. She's standing in the sun. She's right.

44.

The carpenter built a door for the mayor. It opens to a different room depending on who turns the handle.

45.

Livestock born after the curse have one too many eyes. The village just... doesn't talk about it.

46.

The tailor sews in the dark now. She says the needle knows where to go.

47.

Every portrait in the mayor's house has turned to face the wall. He nailed them in place. They turned again.

48.

A bard came through and played a cheerful song. Every instrument in the tavern played along — by itself.

49.

The oldest tree in the village square has started growing downward. Into the ground.

50.

Three separate people have woken up in beds that aren't theirs, in houses they don't recognize, with no memory of walking there.

51–80Deep Curse
51.

The apothecary says all her healing herbs have started growing thorns. Even the lavender.

52.

A child says the well told her a secret. She won't say what it is, but she hasn't spoken since.

53.

The chickens lay eggs with symbols on the shells. The priest says they're divine signs. The herbalist said they were warnings. The herbalist is gone now.

54.

Someone saw the innkeeper's face change for just a second — different features, different eyes. She laughed it off.

55.

The village hounds refuse to enter the chapel. One was dragged inside and came out with white fur.

56.

Footprints appear on the road every morning leading out of town. They stop at the border and turn back.

57.

A fisherman pulled a locked box from the river. Inside was a note with his name and the words "don't open the second one."

58.

The weather inside the village is always slightly different than outside it. It rained in the square while the surrounding farms stayed dry.

59.

The cobbler's shop smells like grave dirt. He doesn't have a grave anywhere near him. Anymore.

60.

Every compass in the village points toward the chapel. Including the ones without needles.

61.

The village's only horse tried to speak last night. It managed two words before collapsing. The stablehand won't repeat them.

62.

A patch of ground behind the smithy won't grow anything. The soil is warm to the touch year-round.

63.

A woman who vanished two months ago was spotted at her own kitchen window, waving. Her family had boarded it shut from the inside.

64.

The blacksmith's apprentice quit when the forge started answering back.

65.

Candles in the chapel burn downward normally but the wax flows upward.

66.

A dog brought a human tooth to its owner. Then another. Then seven more. Different teeth, different people.

67.

The village records show a census from 50 years ago listing the exact same residents by name.

Rainwater collected in the village square evaporates within minutes. Water from outside the village boundary is fine.

Two merchants independently reported that the road to the village is six miles shorter than the road leaving it.

A wedding ring was found in the ashes of the forge. It belongs to someone who hasn't disappeared yet.

The last three visitors to the village all arrived on the same day and all asked for the same person — someone nobody has heard of.

The butcher found his knives rearranged in a pattern every morning. He started sleeping in the shop. Now the pattern appears in his dreams.

73.

A tree fell in the village and when they counted the rings, the inner ones were still growing.

74.

The priest blesses the water every Sunday. It stays blessed for shorter and shorter periods.

75.

Night falls fifteen minutes earlier inside the village boundary than outside it. The gap is widening.

76.

A gravedigger discovered that one coffin is empty. The problem is, no one can agree on whose it was.

77.

The schoolhouse chalk writes by itself during the night. The messages are arithmetic problems with wrong answers. The wrong answers are dates.

78.

An outsider tried to sketch the village and found they kept drawing a sixth building that doesn't exist. Yet.

79.

The barber noticed that hair clippings swept onto the floor rearrange themselves into shapes when no one is looking.

80.

A local boy found a coin in the road from a kingdom that won't exist for another hundred years.

81–100The Veil Is Thin
81.

The village scarecrows have been moving between fields. The farmers have started nailing them down. It hasn't helped.

82.

Every time someone tells a lie inside the tavern, a candle goes out. The innkeeper buys a lot of candles.

83.

An herbalist from the next town visited and left immediately. She said the plants here are "listening."

84.

The old millstone cracked and something inside it was still breathing.

85.

Birds that fly over the village cast shadows that don't match their shape.

86.

The mayor commissioned a new map of the village. The cartographer included roads that don't exist yet. They appeared the following week.

87.

Frost forms on the inside of windows on the warmest nights, but only in houses where someone is dreaming.

88.

The village bells have developed a thirteenth toll at midnight. No one installed a thirteenth bell.

89.

A cellar flooded with water that smells like tears. It drained on its own after exactly one day.

90.

The wheelwright found teeth marks on his wagon spokes. Human teeth marks. At regular intervals, like counting.

91.

A visiting paladin's holy symbol cracked the moment she crossed the village boundary. She left immediately.

92.

Mushrooms growing on the north wall of the tavern rearrange nightly. Last night they spelled HELP.

93.

The local drunk says he can hear every conversation in the village if he puts his ear to the ground. He's been too accurate to ignore.

94.

A widow found her husband's boots by the door, cleaned and oiled. He's been missing for two months.

95.

The village clock runs perfectly during the day. At night, the hands spin backward, and the clockmaker swears it keeps better time that way.

96.

Three graves in the cemetery have been dug from the inside out. The bodies are still in them.

97.

A child asked the party cleric to bless her doll. When asked why, she said, "Because it's going to wake up soon."

98.

The cheese in the cellar of the tavern has aged thirty years in one month. The innkeeper has been selling it. It's the best cheese anyone's ever tasted.

99.

A woman ran screaming from the chapel claiming the statues turned to watch her. The priest said she was hysterical. The statues are now facing a different direction.

100.

The village sign at the road reads a different name every morning. Today it says "HOLLOWMERE." Nobody recognizes that name. Nobody except the child who won't stop crying.

DM Tips for Running These

Layered Truth

Before your session, mark 10–15 rumors as “true” for your specific village. The rest are paranoia, misunderstandings, or exaggeration. This way you know what to reinforce when players investigate.

Contradictions Are Features

If two rumors contradict each other, that's perfect. Real witnesses disagree. Let your players sort truth from fear.

NPC Delivery

Don't just read rumors as bullet points. Have the nervous innkeeper whisper #54 while glancing at the door. Have the village drunk shout #93 and get ignored by everyone. Have a child deliver #97 with perfect calm. The delivery makes the rumor.

Player Paranoia

After dropping 3–4 rumors, let the players stew. Don't volunteer information. When they start theorizing, some of their wrong guesses will be better than what you planned. Steal liberally.
